Back in the Victorian era, we saw that literally, everything was gender specific. There was a label on everything that this is for men because it makes them feel more masculine and this is for women which will make them look more feminine and timid. But we live in a different world now, this is now the era of androgynous fashion which is neither feminine nor masculine, it is basically gender-neutral fashion or we can say gender inclusive.
What is gender-neutral fashion?
Gender Neutral Fashion is a growing trend in the fashion world. It is not just reserved for those who are transgender or gender fluid, but also for those that want to dress outside of traditional gender roles. Gender-neutral clothing has its own unique style and fashion. It varies from person to person based on their preferences. Most people associate gender-neutral clothes with menswear because it does not have any feminine features, however, there are plenty of unisex items available for women as well.
Gender neutrality is becoming more and more popular. This can be seen in the rise of gender-neutral baby names, gender-neutral school uniforms, and even gender-neutral bathrooms. Brands that are attempting to break down barriers between the genders, such as Gucci, have been taking advantage of a growing demand for clothes that do not separate clothing by gender.
How to create your own gender-neutral look
A great way to look more put together and polished is by creating your own gender-neutral outfits. We all like to feel comfortable, but sometimes we end up wearing the same thing because it is what we know looks good on us or it’s easy. Creating your own uniform will help you become more confident in your daily style. But the biggest mistake people make while creating an androgynous look is trying too hard. Here are some tips to create your own gender-neutral look.
Androgynous clothing
Androgynous clothing is gender neutral clothing style, the main purpose of dressing neutrally is to not highlight gender-specific features. Women are sexualized in every possible manner in this world and today’s women just do not want it. That’s the main key to androgynous clothing, loose and baggy shirts, and boyfriend or mom jeans instead of skinny jeans. Everything tight and skinny just shows off women’s curves. You can wear an oversized sweatshirt in winter or a denim jacket with sneakers and you are good to go. Pull off button-up shirts and long oversized blazers, that’ll do the magic.
We have often seen Cara Delevigne and Harry Style guide in androgynous clothing on the red carpet and they definitely nail the look. This new fashion trend has made it so easy for everyone to dress up according to their choice, not according to what society has labeled them. That is actually the best part of this new generation of fashion.
Gender neutral accessories
Back in time, bright and upbeat colors were only worn by women, men usually were limited to the basic colors. Women used to wear accessories of different colors and there was a vast variety of things for women and very selective things for men. But that’s not a thing anymore, as we have accepted that only two genders are not a thing. In this new era, everyone has the liberty to wear any color they want and any accessory they want, no matter how they identify themselves. You are a man and want a piercing? Go get it, it’s not girlish. If you want to wear cool color shades, wear them. It’s a fashion now, you don’t have to stick with the old blacks and browns. If you’re a girl nail that tie or bow tie also try a cool baseball hat.
Haircut
To nail your androgynous look get rid of the boring long hair and ditch all the fuss of straightening and curling. Cut your hair short, the shorter the better. The preferable cut for this look is a pixie cut. You see Ellen Degeneres and Ruby Rose, how these two own the pixie cut. That is the classic androgynous look you might want.
Shoes
sneakers and hard-working boots are my ultimate favorite androgynous footwear. They are cool, they are comfortable, and they go with every outfit. In the end, everything is all about comfort, your shoes should help you in moving forward and not hold you back because they’re painful as hell. I cannot literally feel my feet in heels, it’s like walking on nails and spikes. Why bear this pain in the name of fashion, when we can pull off sneakers and boots everywhere?
Fragrances
This is the generation of gender-fluid fragrances. Yes, that’s right, we millennials have seen all our lives that men use strong and bold scents to suit their personalities. And women choose to wear soft floral fragrances, but I always thought what if I like any men’s perfume better? Am I not allowed to wear it? In my childhood, the answer would be no!
Thanks to Generation Z, we have seen changes in everything clothing, beauty, and now fragrances. People have finally accepted that a scent and a fragrance are not confined to any gender. And it is accepted at a bigger level as giant perfume companies like Gucci, Fendi, and Louis Vuitton have launched their collection of label-free fragrances. Because people no longer want to be labeled in terms of gender or ethnicity, they want to be recognized as individuals with unique choices and tastes.
The fragrance is a way of communication, fragrance creates memories. When people remember someone they remember them by the way they looked and the way they smelt. Everyone has the right to choose how they want to be remembered, be it chamomile, jasmine, rose, or vanilla. This should not be limited to the boundary of gender.
The future of androgynous fashion
The fashion industry is now immune to the changing trends of society. We witnessed the rise of androgynous fashion. The style, which was once considered taboo among the societal elite, is now featured on runways and red carpets from New York to Milan. As expected with any new fad, its appeal has spread far beyond the typical “fashionista” demographic. And this doesn’t seem to stop, this is the new era of fashion now and this is also the future.
